4. Buller River Sand

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Sample 78: Buller River Sand

Quartz, Feldspar (mainly Microline), Minor mica and hornblende. Derived from granite.

This sample was gathered from the Lower Buller Gorge, not far past Inangahua. There are several game fishing spots where the river is accessible via sandy beaches. This particular spot has a huge cliff opposite and a rather colourful farm on roadside.

The beach itself is covered in a variety of rocks and would also be a great place to collect Pink Granite. The sand is quite coarse and will require milling.
